From the golden spire of Doi Suthep to the ancient walls of the Old City - Chiang Mai's temples are unmissable.

Eat like a local, stay in cozy guesthouses, and explore the mountains - without breaking the bank.

Pai, Chiang Rai, Doi Inthanon - the north is full of adventures just a short drive away.
Why Chiang Mai?
The north that changes people.
Chiang Mai is where Bangkok expats escape to when they need to breathe. It's cheaper, quieter, and stacked with culture. Ancient temples, a thriving digital nomad scene, world-class food markets, and direct access to some of Thailand's best trekking - all wrapped in a city you can walk across in an afternoon.
Nick spent three months here thinking he was just passing through. That's how Chiang Mai works.
Nick's top picks - all bookable, all worth it.
Feed, bathe, and walk with rescued elephants at a sanctuary that puts welfare first. No rides, no shows - just elephants being elephants.
Waterfalls, royal pagodas, cloud forest, and birding. Thailand's highest mountain is only 90 minutes from the city - and almost no tourists know about it.
Start at a local market, pick your ingredients, and cook 4–5 classic Thai dishes under the guidance of a local chef. Take the recipes home.
The Sunday Walking Street on Wualai Road is great - but it's packed with tourists. Warorot Market (Kad Luang) is where Chiang Mai locals actually shop. Fresh produce, northern Thai street food, hill tribe textiles, and zero tourist markup. Go Saturday morning for the adjacent flower market too.
"If you want to eat like a local, Warorot at 7am beats any hotel breakfast."
Two neighborhoods worth knowing - one clear winner.
Walled, walkable, and packed with temples, cafés, and guesthouses. The Old City puts you inside Chiang Mai's cultural core. Early morning alms-giving, night markets, and some of the best boutique stays in Thailand - all within a 20-minute walk.
"The Old City is where you feel Chiang Mai. Stay here first." - Nick

Chiang Mai's trendiest neighbourhood. Boutique coffee shops, contemporary art galleries, co-working spaces, and an energetic foodie scene. Great base for digital nomads or anyone coming from Bangkok who wants to keep that city feeling.
Better for long stays. A little removed from the temples - but the brunch game is strong.

The temple Chiang Mai is watched over by. Climb 309 steps, get a panoramic view of the city, and visit the sacred Phra That Doi Suthep temple. Non-negotiable.

An off-the-beaten-path hill village with waterfalls, coffee trees, and homestays. Almost no tour groups. Nick's favourite escape from Chiang Mai.
Book day trip →"I spent three months in Chiang Mai thinking I was just passing through. I kept extending my stay - the cooking classes, the morning markets, the fact that I could rent a scooter and be in a national park before 9am. Eventually I stopped making excuses and just called it home for a while."
